Community Relations
A group from FCSO helps out the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans
The Office of the Fayette County Sheriff is committed to establishing close ties with and
responding to the needs of the community and correcting actions, practices, and attitudes that
may contribute to community tensions and grievances. This commitment to the community extends
from each of our departments and is evident in the number of additional services that we offer.
We are confident that our participation in and facilitation of these programs has improved the
safety of our community and its citizens. We are proud of our commitment to you. These are
some of the programs in which we participate.
Lexington-Fayette County TRIAD
The Right Information and Direction
In 1999, Sheriff Kathy Witt nurtured the development of TRIAD in the Lexington-Fayette County
area following a joint survey conducted by the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and our Office.
This survey sought to assess the needs of the elderly in our community. These metrics brought
into focus the need to decrease the criminal victimization of the elderly and increase the
concept of cooperation among local agencies and the elderly.
By April of 1999, local TRIAD meetings were taking place to advance the elderly’s agenda in
the Lexington-Fayette County area. These meetings are open to the public. For information on
these meetings, please feel free to contact our Office.
What specifically does the Lexington-Fayette County TRIAD do?
- Educate: Sponsor crime prevention and victim/witness programs for older persons
- Assist: Recruit and train volunteers to assist the Sheriff’s Office and the police department
- Emphasize: Staff reassurance programs for older persons to reduce fear and provide moral support
- Communicate: Provide a forum for law enforcement and the community to share needs and concerns and to develop solutions
- Involve: Unite seniors, sheriffs, and local police to identify problem areas for seniors in the local community to develop
and implement community-wide solutions
If you feel that you have been a victim of a crime, please call the Office of the
Fayette County Sheriff at 859-252-1771.

McGruff the Crime Dog®
National Crime Prevention Council
McGruff the Crime Dog® is a national icon that began in 1980. The mission of this successful advertising
campaign has been to teach children and others that law enforcement cannot fight crime alone. We participate in
this program by visiting local schools who request a visit from McGruff®. Our past sessions have been incredibly
successful and, without a doubt, have strengthened our community's fight against crime.
If you would like McGruff® to visit your school, please contact our Office at 859-252-1771.
